Frequently asked questions.
How much is membership?
Membership is £5 per year and is open to all members of University of York Students’ Union (YUSU). We can also accept non-YUSU members as long as they are not subject to disciplinary proceedings or consequent condition of their membership. This includes students on a leave of absence.
What can you gain from membership?
Norman Rea Gallery allows members to try their hand at gallery management and curatorial practises. It also allows for hands on learning with the realities of running, maintaining and preserving continuation of a venue, such as managing the safety of artworks and painting the gallery. The society gives responsibilities to its members and a unique opportunity in York to work in a campus-based gallery space.
How can I join the committee?
The Committee is democratically elected at an Annual General Meeting (AGM). All of the Committee must be current YUSU members who are enrolled and studying on a University of York programme. Only current paying members of the Society are allowed to stand for election.
All members will be made aware of their ability to stand for election and vote. Only paying members who are also full members of YUSU are entitled to vote. All members of the Society will have the chance to question candidates and submit a vote in private.
How do you select artworks for exhibitions?
Generally we plan an exhibition idea and then search for artists who’s artwork matches the themes of the exhibition. We like to give many artists an opportunity to exhibit with us to offer a variety of work in each exhibition, complimenting and adding to the conversation of each exhibition topic in their own unique way.
